Our Lady of Guápulo
Further images
The crowned Virgin and Child appear surrounded by angels, their richly ornamented garments forming a broad, triangular silhouette. Pearls, flowers, jewels and a coral-coloured rosary enliven the pale blue mantle. The cartouche below identifies the devotion: “N.S. de Guápulo”.
The painting reflects the circulation of Marian images across the Andes. The cult originated at the sanctuary of Guápulo, near Quito, and spread to other artistic centres, including Cusco. In El Manto de los Pueblos, Ewa Kubiak relates this canvas to the Cusco tradition and discusses it among the local Marian devotions of the Viceroyalty of Peru.
