Gonzalo Eguiguren Gallery lent Saint Joseph and the Christ Child by Luisa Roldán, known as La Roldana, to Luisa Roldán. Escultora real at the Museo Nacional de Escultura in Valladolid. The sculpture was presented courtesy of Gonzalo Eguiguren Gallery and Federico Cía.
Inaugurated on 28 November 2024 and open to the public from 29 November 2024 to 9 March 2025 at the Palacio de Villena, the exhibition was curated by Miguel Ángel Marcos Villán and Pablo F. Amador Marrero. It explored the career of the sculptor who rose from the workshops of Seville and Cádiz to become sculptor to the Spanish court.
Dating to 1689–1706, the carved and polychromed wooden group depicts a tender encounter between Saint Joseph and the kneeling Christ Child. The exchange of gestures, the expressive faces and the richly coloured drapery reveal the intimacy of Roldán’s devotional sculpture.
The accompanying exhibition catalogue, Luisa Roldán. Escultora real, was published by the Ministerio de Cultura and the Fundación de Amigos del Museo Nacional de Escultura. The museum’s exhibition page and catalogue record are linked below.
