Three rampant animals alternate with three stylised flowers around a fourth flower at the centre of this New Spanish wooden batea. Curling foliage and a restrained palette of ochre and muted green animate the dark ground, creating a bold, rhythmic composition.

Adrián Contreras-Guerrero discusses the work in Las Artes del Galeón de Manila as one of two examples of falso maque: painted wooden objects that emulate the appearance of Michoacán lacquerware without sharing the same maque technique.

The author compares its decorative scheme with a batea in the Museo de América, Madrid (inv. 06925), and with related chests in the Instituto Valencia de Don Juan and the Ermita de la Concepción in Breña Alta. He proposes a possible common origin in Uruapan. This remains a scholarly hypothesis rather than a confirmed workshop attribution; the work is therefore catalogued here as New Spain.
