Christ Child as Salvator Mundi
Unidentified artist, Peru, 1600–1630
Oil on canvas

Thoma Foundation
Standing between two columns, the Christ Child raises his right hand in blessing and holds an orb in his left. His red garments stand out against a star-filled sky and a distant landscape. Emblems and monograms enrich the architectural setting. Known in the Hispanic world as the Niño de la bola, this image presents Christ's universal sovereignty through the figure of a child.
