Saint Isidore the Farmer

This richly decorated sculpture represents Saint Isidore the Farmer, the patron saint of agricultural workers, accompanied by two white oxen on the base. His association with miraculous cultivation made him a particularly important figure in the devotional life of rural communities throughout Spanish America. The group recalls the tradition of angels ploughing the fields while the saint devoted himself to prayer.
The elaborate gilded floral decoration of his garments and the ruff around his neck transform the humble labourer into a figure of devotional splendour. In his research on the sculpture, Adrián Contreras-Guerrero relates its modelling and polychromy to workshops of the Viceroyalty of Peru, while leaving the precise place of manufacture open. The dark-ground estofado, with finely incised lines and small vegetal motifs, connects the work with a broader seventeenth-century sculptural tradition shared by New Granada, Quito and Peru.
