Running hares in cartouches surround a long-tailed bird among flowers, while gilt scrolls and red and green vegetation animate the pale ground. This elaborate Pátzcuaro batea reflects the taste for Asian birds-and-flowers imagery within New Spanish lacquerwork. It belongs to the so-called Taller de los Galgos series, a conventional name for related decorative works rather than a securely documented workshop. Both front and reverse display carefully coordinated floral and animal ornament.
