This sculpted image translates the familiar iconography of Our Lady of Guadalupe into carved, gilded and polychromed wood. The Virgin joins her hands in prayer beneath a star-covered blue mantle, supported by an angel and surrounded by a radiant gilt-bronze mandorla. Fine floral decoration and the carefully modelled folds of her robe enrich the surface. The work preserves the frontal devotional presence associated with the image of Tepeyac while giving it sculptural depth.
