Designed for needlework and the storage of small implements, this Pátzcuaro sewing box combines practical use with an elaborate sequence of painted interiors. Raising its padded lid reveals scenes of sociability, portrait medallions, flowers and a central mirror; further openings disclose normally concealed decoration. Its painted and gilded surfaces continue the tradition associated with José Manuel de la Cerda. The object was exhibited in Bateas novohispanas.
